Information on Visiting the Mari Sandoz Site in Sheridan County, NE
The Mari Sandoz site is accessible en route to the conference in Chadron and after the conference for those attendees coming from the south and east.
Mari was buried on the ranch called the “Orchard Place” or the “Sandhills Place,” the second home of Mary and Jules Sandoz, between Gordon and Ellsworth, Neb. The ranch has a caretaker is still owned by the Sandoz family. Visitors are welcome to visit the gravesite during daylight hours and weather permitting since roads to the gravesite are unpaved.
The location is along Highway 27 about 25 to 30 miles south of Gordon or 30 miles north of Ellsworth.
En Route from the southeast….take westbound Highway 2 toward Alliance, turn right (north) on to Highway 27at Ellsworth. The site is approximately 30 miles from Ellsworth and then another 25 to 30 miles north to Gordon. You can then catch westbound Highway 20 to Chadron from Gordon. Reverse route directions if you choose to visit the site after the conference. (see below directions from Chadron)
En Route from the east...eastbound Highway 20 toward Chadron, turn left (south) on to Highway 27 at Gordon and take the highway south about 25 to 30 miles to the site. To get back to Chadron, return north to Gordon and then west to Chadron on Highway 20.
From Chadron, take Highway 20 east to Gordon, turn right (south) on to Highway 27 and drive 25 to 30 miles to the site. From the site, continue south another 30 miles to Ellsworth and then turn left (east) on Highway 2 toward Broken Bow/Grand Island.
